What you see out there in the world is what you get. You can spot enemies from a distance, allowing you to avoid or engage in a tactical way, however they will always notice you when you’re a few metres away from them, even if you attempt to sneak up from behind. Initiating battles are streamlined in a way that allows you to engage combat with enemies without any loading. As is to be expected, Trials of Mana on Nintendo Switch caters more to the modern gaming era as opposed to the original Seiken Densetsu 3‘s more rigid gameplay structure. This remake takes on a more traditional 3D viewpoint with 360° camera movement, with the combat having a dynamic Action-RPG approach. I'd get it on sale, but even then I don't think I'd pay more than $10 for something like this.A remake is one thing, but Trials of Mana takes on a whole new perspective of this Super Famicom RPG classic. It's kept me engaged just enough to keep playing, but I feel like I'm forcing myself at this point. I'd probably give the game a 3/10 so far, a failing score. It runs pretty well considering, but I would consider my performance results a bit void as my system is overkill for something like this (9900K + 2080 Ti). But even then, without modding the graphics to some extent, you'll be greeted with horrible texture pop-in. The only thing that I can see going well for this game is the graphics. The entire thing feels like it was made by someone in elementary school. Honestly, I've put a few hours into the game and I feel almost swindled. Nothing here that's going to stand out against other games in the genre. Super simple, kinda bland and hits many tropes. This means half the time you'll try to interact with something/someone and end up jumping around instead.Īnd lastly, the story.

On top of this, you pretty much have the most basic attack pattern in history. Enemies don't hit hard and they move slow enough to perfect almost every fight. You WILL get hit by enemies, mostly because their basic attack almost never has a wind-up, and/or you'll have several enemies attack you at once. I put it on normal as I don't like games where the fodder enemies have too much health, but the attack patterns are so slow its like they're asking you not to get hit. Just play it with Japanese voices or turn down dialogue completely.Ĭombat is engaging to a degree, but I found it to be laughably easy. Additionally, some of the women sound like a man imitating the sound of a woman. Most of the characters just either sound like they're reading a script or super childish. The game features a 'remastered' music track, which unfortunately, seems worse than the original.Įnglish Voices are especially bad. I found myself turning down/off game music pretty quickly, as it got stale almost immediately. Music in most places is pretty much the same, and has a very short loop. In other words, this game almost punishes you for talking to everyone, instead of rewarding you with lore, character development or items/equipment. This is infuriating because some NPCs can give you class abilities or items, and having to talk to everyone to hear the same thing over and over is monotonous. Most of the world, music and NPCs are pretty much copy and paste.ĩ9.9% of the NPCs you talk to either say the same thing as everyone else, or just have one line to tell you about something unimportant. That being said, it's a low effort remake. This game is a remake of the classic game made in 1995.
